Providing Comprehensive Environmental Services for North America
Utilities often combine their assets and find equipment that is no longer needed due to electric deregulation. Occasionally, entire substations need to be removed. Clean Harbors can dismantle entire substations and properly dispose of all materials.
Prior to the start of work, Clean Harbors will inspect the site to determine hazards and working conditions incidental to the proposed work. Precautions will be taken to ensure that workers and equipment will not be put in danger, especially with energized overhead conductors.
Fluid-containing vessels such as transformers, regulators, circuit breakers, tanks, and pipes are drained, and the fluids are destroyed based on the type of fluid and PCB level. Equipment is removed and shipped to Clean Harbors’ facilities for destruction.
Equipment recycling can include all rigging, lifting disassembly, loading, manifesting and transportation. Equipment recycling also includes all fluids or gases, and accessory equipment, plus tap changers, bushings, arrestors, radiators, fans, pumps, compressors, current transformers, bushing potential devices and control cabinets.
Substation components to be removed include bare conductors, insulated conductors, electrical insulators, fittings, bus work, hardware, conduits, light fixtures, pull boxes, storage cabinets, junction boxes and electrical panels. All material will be removed at ground level unless specified by the customer. Buildings and all structural steel can be leveled and removed.
If required, once the substation has been reduced to ground level, Clean Harbors personnel can establish a sample grid and draw samples, to ensure that area is not PCB contaminated.
